VESIcal: 2. A Critical Approach to Volatile Solubility Modeling Using an Open?Source Python3 Engine

Accurate models of H2O and CO2 solubility in silicate melts are vital for understanding volcanic plumbing systems. These used to estimate the depths magma storage regions from melt inclusion volatile contents, investigate role exsolution as a driver eruptions, track degassing path followed by ascending surface. However, despite large increase number experimental constraints over last two decades, many recent studies still utilize an earlier generation which were calibrated on datasets with restricted compositional ranges. This may be because available tools more require numbers input parameters hand-typed (e.g., temperature, concentrations H2O, CO2, 8–14 oxides), making them difficult implement datasets. Here, we use new open-source Python3 tool, VESIcal, critically evaluate behaviors sensitivities different range compositions. Using literature andesitic-dacitic products inclusions case studies, illustrate importance evaluating calibration dataset each model. Finally, highlight limitations particular data presentation methods, such isobar diagrams, provide suggestions alternatives, best practices regarding archiving data. review will aid selection most applicable model compositions, identifies areas where additional required.
